Dome steps up staff fitness regime

Staff at the Doncaster Dome will be watching their step as they embark on a new keep fit initiative.
The Dome's senior management team have been issued with pedometers as part of a Doncaster council initiative aimed at encouraging greater physical activity in the workplace.

A pedometer is a small electronic device that counts the steps the holder takes at any given time and is popular with health specialists as a motivational tool assisting in the fight against heart disease and weight management.

Doncaster Council's Cabinet Member for Public Health, Councillor Eva Hughes said: "We're encouraging companies in Doncaster to use pedometers in a bid to motivate staff into a more active day at work. People spend a vast amount of their time at work and that means if you use that time to be more physically active it can have a big impact on fitness and health issues without taking over your life.
"Things like going to speak to someone in the same building face-to-face rather than using the phone or email can make a noticeable difference and I'm delighted The Dome is taking up challenge."

Gavin Baldwin, The Dome's Chief Executive, said: "We like to practice what we preach. Our business is health and fitness and so we want to encourage everyone, including staff, to feel the benefit of an active lifestyle."

All front-line staff at The Dome have been given pedometers to count their steps. Pedometers are becoming increasingly popular and can be integrated into mobile phones.
