'Middle Eastern Magic' dances into Doncaster

Date Posted: March 5th 2007

Dance classes with a difference are coming to Doncaster.

The Doncaster Dome has introduced belly dancing classes to help get local residents and dance enthusiasts learn the exotic art from March 19.

Students will learn Egyptian style belly dance techniques, enabling them to dance solo and as part of group choreographies. As skills develop, various styles will be incorporated including the use of veils, sticks and sagat finger cymbals.

Dance instructor Jacky Oruc, said: "Belly dance is a fantastic way to tone your body and rediscover yourself as a sensual woman. It's an incredible confidence builder and is suitable for ages from 14 to late 60s regardless of body size, shape and fitness levels."

Belly dance is the western name for an Arabic style of dance that is thought to have its roots in the Middle East, Egypt and India.

Besides being an art form, it is also regarded as a useful method of weight loss as it provides a complete cardiovascular workout and strengthens abdominal muscles.

"Belly dance is a great, elegant way of getting and keeping in shape and is really good fun. There is a fantastic social scene with regular events for everyone to take part in.

"We also organise parties for students so they can show off their new skills to friends and family and it helps get everyone involved. It's Middle Eastern magic!"

Gavin Baldwin, Chief Executive at the Dome, said: "It's great to have these classes at the Dome. We are always looking for fun and interesting ways for people to get involved in leisure activities.

"We have already had a lot of interest in this class and we are sure that people will really enjoy trying something new."

A 90 minute taster class will take place on Monday 19 March at The Dome to introduce people interested to the fundamentals of the dance and then weekly classes will take place on Tuesdays from 8pm. Children under the age of 14 are not permitted.

The class will be £5 per person and dancers are advised to wear comfortable clothing (no jeans) and to bring their own water.
